Why torch on membrane is the ideal waterproofing material
Torch on membrane is a popular material for waterproofing, which is widely used in many situations, including concrete waterproofing. But what is torch on membrane, and why is it so effective for this purpose?
Torch on membrane is a flexible waterproofing membrane that is made up of a mixture of bitumen (a hydrocarbon made from crude oil), which is modified with Atactic Polypropylene Plastic (APP) modified asphalt or Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS) rubber modified asphalt, and then reinforced with a layer of non-woven polyester.
APP and SBS modified asphalts have different advantages and disadvantages. APP melts well when heated with a torch, but it is not as resilient to the stress of being stretched as SBS is. SBS doesn’t torch as well, but has a greater flexibility, which allows it to resist being deformed by stress loads, making it ideal for usages like wall flashings or waterproofing areas that need a highly flexible sheet of membrane. It is also more resistant to tears and punctures.
These attributes of torch-on membrane make it an ideal waterproofing method for situations where full water immersion will occur, as well as sub-soil applications. Examples of these applications include sealing rooftops, decks, balconies, box gutters, and planter boxes. It can also protect buildings while blending in aesthetically with the building’s environment, as there is a range of mineral finishes available that can be used to match the surrounding features.
Torch-on membrane also has a number of other useful features. Its composition and the flexibility it creates allows for it to have a long lifespan, particularly for those created with SBS-modified asphalt. It is also non-water soluble, non-biodegradable, non-carcinogenic, and non-toxic, making it environmentally friendly. Because it does not release toxic fumes or create much noise pollution when being installed, it is also not as invasive a procedure to install it. Finally, it protects the insulation and can reflect sunrays.
Torch on membrane offers excellent properties for a number of waterproofing needs, particularly when waterproofing concrete. If you are looking for expert waterproofing, and you want to know if torch on the membrane is the right material for your job, contact Le Fong Waterproofing on +65 8333 7667.
